Against Ola in the first round of the 2013 Union Grove Holiday Tournament, Woodland junior Deontae McClanahan was a one-man scoring run.

After the Mustangs put the first five points on the board, McClanahan scored the next 10 to put the Wolfpack ahead for good en route to a 58-39 victory last Friday.

“We tend to get off to a slow start so I just wanted to come out and set the tempo and keep it going from there,” said McClanahan, who finished with a game-high 14 points.

To reverse the flow of the game, McClanahan made a pair of free throws, a tough baseline jumper, a 3-pointer and then three more foul shots.

“Deontae is always in attack mode,” Woodland assistant coach Quinton King said. “When he feels like he can attack the basket, which is good, we tell him to attack. He came out, hit some shots and that got him into a little rhythm.”

McClanahan also found Raphael Jones in the corner for a 3-pointer during the decisive 14-0 run.

“I just try to penetrate and get my teammates into the game,” McClanahan said. I just try to score and play defense.”

Woodland maintained a double-digit lead the rest of the way and led by as many as 19 points.

As far as McClanahan, he also has a 3.4 grade-point average and would like to play at the Division-I level.
