After a miserable 2012 season, Derrick Powell and the Henry County Warhawks are back in the playoffs.

“We were determined to win this year because last year wasn’t the Henry County we know,” said Powell, who is the team’s leading rusher. “We aren’t known for losing like that so during the summer we worked hard to get back to how we were.”

Last season, the Warhawks had just a 1-9 record but have bounced back under the guidance of new coach Morris Starr and will be one of the teams in the Class AAA playoffs next week.

“We were determined to get back to the playoffs even though we had a new coach,” Powell said.

Powell’s speed out of the backfield has been a major part of the team’s turnaround as well. Before last week’s game against Pike County, he had 844 rushing yards, 290 receiving yards and 13 touchdowns.

“It’s all because of the line,” Powell said. “They stepped up from last year when they were inexperienced. I’ve just been following the big boys.”

Powell describes himself as a scat back due to his smaller stature but impressive speed, and likes to watch Adrian Peterson, Todd Gurley and T.J. Yeldon run the ball.

As far as college, Powell would like to continue playing football at Georgia Southern, West Georgia or Tennessee.
