Cambridge’s Devin Kane came up with not only the most important victory of his high school wrestling career, but also the biggest win in the school’s brief wrestling history at the Class AAAAA state wrestling tournament at Loganville High School Feb. 22.

The sophomore won a 6-2 decision over Pope’s T.J. Collins to win the AAAAA 145-pound championship and give Cambridge the points it needed to clinch its first state wrestling team title and first state crown of any kind in the school’s two-year history.

A transfer from Metea Valley High School in Aurora, Ill., where he was one of the top-ranked wrestlers in his weight class in Illinois as a freshman last year, Kane made an immediate impact at Cambridge this season with a 57-3 dual meet record and 40 pins.

“Devin wrestles a tough, hard-nosed style of wrestling and he’s physical and that’s something we lacked,” Cambridge coach Don St. James said. “We lacked that physicalness and we’ve become a little more physical and that’s helped us. Devin puts constant pressure on everybody he wrestles and put in extra time to accomplish his goals.”
