Luella senior center midfielder Giancarlo Malerba is part of the best start in program history for the boys’ soccer team and he knows why.

“It’s because of hard work, starting with conditioning,” Malerba said. “We ran as a team. We practiced a lot harder and we challenged each other every day in practice. That contributes to our game and how we practice is how we play.”

The four-year varsity player also realizes that the main new voice on the sideline has plenty to do with this perfect start.

“Coach [Kurt] Peters made us better,” Malerba said. “He made sure there are no cliques like last year and the previous years. That we appreciate our teammates and always do our best. He is one of the reasons why we are 6-0.”

There have also been special moments during this run for Malerba and the Lions, especially when they defeated Union Grove 2-0 on March 11.

“Our old coach (Nick Ellis) is the athletic director now for that team and during my three years here we didn’t beat them once but we finally beat them and we beat our old coach which is always fun and awesome,” Malerba said.

This past football season was also memorable for Malerba, who kicked the game-winning field goal with 28 seconds left to defeat Henry County.

Malerba has a 4.0 GPA and wants to be a dentist.
