As the degree of the Mustangs’ competition increased with their move to GHSA, so has Harper’s level of play.
The 5-foot-4 freshman, who averaged 10 points a game a year ago, has doubled his scoring average to 21 points per contest to lead Mount Vernon to a 3-1 start.
Harper, who is also averaging five assists per game, scored 28 points to lead the Mustangs to a 75-56 victory over Johns Creek Nov. 17 — going 21-for-24 from the free throw line.
He also had 24 points in a 64-60 loss to Dunwoody Nov. 19 as well as 21 points in Mount Vernon’s convincing 94-22 win over crosstown rival North Springs Nov. 16.
“He shoots the ball extremely well,” Mount Vernon coach Curtis Berry said. “He is shooting upwards from 60 to 65 percent and he shoots well from the 3-point range.”
Harper has also assumed a leadership role on the team — not only as its floor general at point guard, but as one of its two co-captains.
“He brings a lot of leadership to the court,” Berry said.
