Up to now, Jay Harris has been playing more of a supporting role in the Lovett offense behind such stalwarts as running back Grant Haley and quarterback Willie Candler.

It was the 5-foot-8, 185-pound sophomore running back who stepped to the forefront for the Lions, however, in their season-opening win over Woodward Aug. 23.

Harris rushed for 148 yards on 12 carries — averaging 13.5 yards a carry — to lead Lovett to its 21-14 victory.

He ran for 57 yards on his first carry of the game and he added a 60-yard run later in the contest.

With his 148 yards, Harris gained more yardage in one game than he did all of last season, when he rushed for 115 yards on 18 carries and scored a touchdown as a freshman.

“We weren’t really surprised,” Lovett coach Mike Muschamp said. “He’s got that kind of ability. He’s got really good vision and he’s got a very low center of gravity and is very difficult to tackle. The thing I like most about him is, he packs a punch when he runs the football and it makes it difficult to bring him down. He’s a very physical runner and he seems to enjoy that aspect of running the ball.”
