It can be said that Mitch Stallings went the extra mile in leading Lovett to the Class AA state baseball championship.

Only two days after pitching a complete game in Lovett’s 2-1 opening-game loss to Westminster May 25, the junior right-hander came back and went the distance again to lead the Lions to a 5-2 victory in the decisive third game May 27.

Stallings shook off the fatigue to give up only five hits and strike out seven hitters in his seven innings on the mound in game three.

He also gave a strong effort in Lovett’s opening-game loss, allowing only two runs and fanning five batters. Stallings finished the season with a 10-2 record with a 1.10 earned run average, 112 strikeouts and 26 walks in 89 innings pitched.

“In 15 years of coaching, Mitch’s performance in the championship game was the gutsiest I’ve ever seen,” Lovett coach Lance Oubs said. “His tremendous work ethic and aggressive arm care program allowed him to do what he did on short rest. When you compare the stat line from game one and game three, you could actually say he pitched better in the final game. Mitch is a special kid and I’m thrilled he had such a successful season.”
