If Reilly Friedman finishes the 2013 season the way he has started it, another state championship will be a certainty.

The Galloway junior – the defending Class A private school boys’ individual champion — appeared to be in peak form when he ran a personal-best 15 minutes, 17.85 seconds to finish second at the Furman Invitational in Greenville, S.C., Sept. 14.

It is also the best time posted in the state this year among boys’ runners, according to ga.milesplit.com.

“The tough competition at Furman was great for Reilly,” Galloway coach Denny Beatty said. “He pushed through each mile and it helped him reach his potential.”

Friedman won his first three meets of the season – the Our Lady of Mercy Invitational in Fairburn Aug. 24 (15:57.85), the Berry College Clara Bowl Invitational in Mt. Berry Aug. 31 (15:58) and the Wesleyan Invitational in Norcross Sept. 7 (16:41.66).

“Reilly has a great work ethic,” Beatty said. “He worked hard this summer and it is paying off early in the season.”

In addition to his Class A individual cross country championship last fall, Friedman also won the 3,200-meter run in the same classification at the boys’ state track and field meet last spring.
