Samantha Shipp, a third-grade teacher and chair of the Mason Creek competition, and school system science leader Susan Walker helped organize the science fair, which attracted 23 entries from the school’s students.
The five winners were selected by a group of judges which included Douglasville Police Chief Chris Womack, teachers and volunteers from the school and a representative from Stevi B’s Pizza Buffet.
The winners were Dion Orellana, 10, son of Diony and Mirna Orellana; Kendyl Jones, 8, and Jacquelyn Jones, 10, daughters of Elizabeth and Thomas Jones; Xaria Hamilton, 8, daughter of Xiomara Hamilton; Kyle Robles, 10, son of Robert and Carmon Robles.
After selecting a project, the students had to give details about the project to their teachers. The students then had to develop and submit their project’s main question. After receiving their teachers’ permission to proceed, the students developed the theme with their teachers’ guidance.
The winners now proceed to the Douglas County district science fair competition set for May 6 at the Douglas County Board of Education annex.
