The council is celebrating 23 years of honoring leaders who show an exemplary commitment to the Atlanta region and the state. The award commemorates the honoree’s significant contributions, both personally and professionally, to his or her community. Past award winners include Buckhead residents Charlie Loudermilk (2011) and Arthur Blank (2010) and former Atlanta Mayor Shirley Franklin (2009). Massell is a former Atlanta mayor.
The Four Pillar Award and Tribute celebrates the recipient’s philanthropic endeavors as well as his or her significant contributions to economic development and the state’s quality of life. The council considers the “Four Pillars” of leadership and success to be quality, responsibility, vision and integrity.
“I am overwhelmed when I look at the stature of those who preceded me,” Massell said of the honor. “I’m quite flattered. It means I have to work that much harder to deserve anything near this.
“It’s interesting, and I’ll comment about it [today], that the organization’s mission is very parallel to the coalition, though our focus is much narrower, just being Buckhead. It’s good to have businesspeople who are organized to help develop and encourage economic growth.”
Massell, a lifelong Atlanta resident, has had successful careers in real estate brokerage, elected office, the field of tourism and association management.The council is a nonprofit trade association that promotes economic development through fair and sound policy. It is committed to the belief that the economic future and quality of life in the metro Atlanta region and Georgia depends on continued balanced and responsible growth.
