Milton Roundup evolving in its sixth year

What started in 2007 as a volunteer-driven event to celebrate the founding of the city of Milton has become an annual celebration.

On Saturday from noon to 6 p.m. the Milton Roundup marks the city’s birthday at Birmingham United Methodist Church, 15770 Birmingham Highway, where the event was first held six years ago.

“I’ll never forget the first event, where we weren’t sure what to expect,” said Councilman Burt Hewitt, who has been involved with the Roundup since its inception. “Thankfully, the event was well received and we surpassed all of our expectations.

That first year, Mayor Joe Lockwood said, was a particularly memorable experience.

“I looked around and saw all the activity and the people and it really hit home that these were the intangible things of becoming a city,” Lockwood said.

“There is the bricks and mortar part of cityhood, but this feeling is one of the best things that happen. People are proud of the city of Milton when they come here. They think ‘this is our city, this is our event.

“We hope for between 3,000 and 5,000 this year, with 7,000 being the ‘whoa, I can’t believe we got this many people’ number.”

For 2012, the structure has been changed up a bit on a few fronts, Wright said. For one thing, it’s not going to be so vendor-focused, as it had been in 2010 and 2011.

“We figured people just went to the Crabapple Festival to purchase arts and such, so we would really push making the event simply more of a fair atmosphere. That’s why this year you’ll see a marked decrease in the sheer number of businesses at the festival.”

Instead, it will be an afternoon of games, rides, food and music. There still will be the event sponsors and local non-profits, but no retail booths selling items like clothing that residents didn’t necessarily respond to in the past two years, Wright said.

All parking is on site, and rides, games and entertainment is free, although there will be a charge for the petting zoo and pony rides. Food will also be sold by various fundraising groups. Activities include a rock wall, moonwalk, bungee station and the event’s signature mechanical bull.

The free activities for kids will spotlight the “go green” theme that is part of Milton’s core mission.
