Over a month ago, the Landmark Christian football program celebrated Reed McGuire and Cole Higbie signing scholarships on National Signing Day. On March 13, two more War Eagles revealed where they will be continuing their football careers.

Offensive lineman Brooks Austin decided to attend Shorter and wide receiver Josh Nobles will head to New Mexico Highlands University in Las Vegas, N.M.

“I could’ve walked on at Ole Miss as a long snapper but I felt like being in Rome was definitely going to be the best place for me to play as a position player, like I love, on the offensive line,” Austin said.

“The quarterbacks coach there is Alex Mortensen, who is an alumni from Landmark, and that had a big thing to do with my decision,” Nobles said. “It’s going to be a big transition especially from a big city to such a small city but I have family in California so it shouldn’t be that bad.”

Even though Nobles didn’t have a lot of opportunities to catch a large number of passes at Landmark, expectations will be different out West.

“It’s a great fit for him,” head coach Wayne Brantley said. “They throw the ball a lot. They were third in the nation in D-II in passing yardage and fifth in total offense last year. They believe he can come in and start as a freshman slot receiver.”

“I plan to bring speed, shiftiness, another level of tenacity and fearlessness to the team,” said Nobles, who plans to major in media arts.

Even though Austin will be miles away from his teammate, he will seek a similar degree in broadcast journalism with a focus in radio.

“I think he is one of the best offensive linemen that has ever played here at Landmark,” Brantley said. “Shorter is getting a really outstanding player, who benches close to 400 pounds and can move his feet for his size. His knowledge of the game is really strong also.”

Last season, Austin and Nobles helped the War Eagles advance to the Class A (Private) Final Four after falling short in the 2011 title game.

“I will miss all the guys in my senior class who I hang out with,” Austin said. “We hang out on the weekends and when we played ball we got after it.”

“The camaraderie with my friends—that will probably be the thing I miss the most,” Nobles said.
