Redan softball has become one of the strongest programs in DeKalb county, winning 13 of its first 14 contests this season and earning a spot in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) playoffs, finishing second in the Region 6-AAAA. The driving force behind the success of the Raiders has been junior Jaylen Black, who has been one of the top hitters and pitchers in the county.

She leads the county in hits with 29 and is second in runs batted in (21), batting average (.690) and runs (21).

“Jaylen is a very strong offensive and defensive player that makes every effort to motivate others to have a desire to win,” Redan head coach Bridget Cartwright-Smith said. “She has been an outstanding student-athlete from the first time I had the opportunity to coach her.”

Black has also been a surprise contributor to the Raiders’ team, pitching for the first time this season and earning a county-high nine wins so far this year.

“Although Jaylen has played other positions such as first base, third base or centerfield, she never declined or expressed any doubt when I needed her to pitch,” Cartwright-Smith said.

In the classroom, Black currently has a 4.13 grade point average on a 4.0 scale. She also plays on the Redan girls’ basketball team.

The Raiders will begin postseason play by hosting Eastside on Oct. 16. If Redan wins in the first round, it would advance to face the winner of the Heritage/Carrollton series for the chance to enter the Elite Eight portion of the playoffs which will take place in Columbus from Oct. 31 to Nov. 1.
