The association is an organization devoted to debate coach education and retention. Since 2006, it has hosted the first of two annual season-ending national tournaments.
While Pace qualified three teams for the national tournament, only two competed: seniors Paula Cheng and Brian Klarman in one and junior Anshuman Parikh and senior Victor Skenderi in the other. Starting Friday, both teams finished the six rounds of preliminary debates with 4-2 records and won their double octafinal debates (the first elimination round, which included 32 teams) to earn a chance to compete in additional elimination rounds Monday.
Cheng and Klarman lost in the octafinal round and finished tied for 12th place. Parikh and Skenderi advanced to the finals to debate Stratford Academy of Macon, the current top team in the nation. Following 2½ hours of debate, the Pace team emerged victorious, making Parikh and Skenderi the 2013 national champions.
In addition, Skenderi received eighth-place speaker honors, and Klarman was the 19th-place speaker.
Two Pace teams have qualified for the 2013 Tournament of Champions, which will take place April 27 through 29 at the University of Kentucky.
