The Paulding County School District saw scores on a statewide performance measurement increase and exceed the statewide average in 2013, Georgia Department of Education officials said.

The school system scored an overall 76.7 for 2013, up from 71.8 in 2012, on Georgia College and Career Ready Performance Index scores the department released last week. The statewide score for all Georgia school systems was 75.8 in 2013.

When grade levels are compared, Paulding’s elementary and middle school scores exceeded the statewide score, while the high school score was 0.5 below the state, the results showed.

Paulding district student assessment director Jason Gregaydis said he foresees the county’s students increasing the scores in coming years.

“Just across the board, elementary, middle and high school, we’ve seen positive trends in the system,” he said.

State officials approved the index as Georgia’s statewide accountability system in 2012 after the U.S. Department of Education granted Georgia a waiver from the federal No Child Left Behind law. It replaced the federal law’s Adequate Yearly Progress measurement.

It is based on a number of factors, including academic progress, scores on tests like the Criterion-Referenced Competency Test, and efforts to close the achievement gap between high- and low-income students. Schools and districts are graded on a scale of zero to 100.

Results showed Paulding’s elementary level grade increased from 74.3 in 2012 to 78.8 in 2013, while middle schools increased from 73.0 in 2012 to 79.1 in 2013. High schools increased from 66.7 in 2012 to 71.5 in 2013 – bucking a statewide trend of a decreasing score at that level.

At individual schools, Paulding elementary scores ranged from Union Elementary at 91.3, to Dallas Elementary at 65.5. Middle school grades ranged from McClure Middle’s 91.1 to Scoggins Middle’s 66.7. High schools ranged from North Paulding High at 77.7, to Paulding County High at 65.7.

Scores increased at 26 schools and decreased at seven schools in 2013 when compared to 2012.

Gregaydis said he was proud of improvements shown in areas officials targeted in the past, including such areas as math scores. He also said the district pushed all groups to score more highly on tests – not just those in the category of “did not meet” standards.

“That’s really where they started to shift some of the points,” he said.

Gregaydis noted changes were made on the 2013 Index about what comprised the most important indicators of preparing students for future demands. In 2012, the part of the index which rewarded schools for performance progress was worth 15 points. That increased to 25 points in the 2013 version. “Progress is where you really look at growth by an individual student,” he said. “You make sure they’re growing compared to their academically similar peers, regardless of whether they were already meeting the standard. If they’re meeting the standard, the progress [component] looks at whether we’re pushing them beyond that.” he said.
