It is at this point every year that the bonafide championship-caliber teams truly begin to emerge.

Contenders for GHSA state glory abound in DeKalb County — those teams and athletes who are finally separating themselves from the pack.

Here’s a rundown of the latest spring-time prep sports happenings:

Track and Field

Redan and Marist once again sitting pretty heading into the state sectionals, scheduled for Saturday at Lakewood.

The Lady Raiders, reigning Class AAAA champs, have captured the Region 6-AAAA Track and Field Championship. The club qualified in 12 events at sectionals.

Crystal Gray won the 200- and 400-meter dashes — running 25.24 and 56.02 seconds respectively — to pace Redan. The team garnered 171 points overall, topping second-place Marist (126 points) en route to the victory.

Over on the boys’ side, Redan finished as region runner-up to Marist.

With their collective efforts, the two storied programs moved one step closer to the GHSA State Championships set for May in

Albany.

Soccer

The Lakeside Lady Vikings are running wild on the competition these days.

The Lady Vikings were undefeated through their first 13 contests, with only one of those ending in a tie.

The club’s dominance at both ends just might carry it all the way to state gold.

Junior Shannon Hagopian (11 goals; 14 assists) and sophomore Brittanie Evans (8 and 23) provide the team’s scoring punch while second-year goalie Ashlee Graham — two goals allowed in 12 starts — has been a brick wall.

Gymnastics

Junior Meg Stephens swept the gold medals at the 2013 DeKalb County Gymnastics Championships to repeat as the all-around champion and lead the

Lakeside Lady Vikings to their second consecutive county title.

Stephens repeated as the gold medalist in the beam and floor exercise while also taking top honors in the uneven parallel bars and the vault.

The junior scored an 8.70 on the bars, 9.0 on the beam, 8.95 on the floor and 8.50 in the vault for an all-around gold medal with a total of 35.25 points

Dunwoody junior Lizzie Marra put together two silvers (beam and

floor) and a bronze (vault) for a total of 32.50 points to take the

all-around silver — just ahead of Lakeside junior Linsey Bergstrom, who finished with a 32.15 total.
