Woods won the July 22 runoff with 50.1 percent statewide, and Buck requested a runoff, which, according to state law (21-2-495), he is entitled to because he lost by less than 1 percent of the vote. According to the secretary of state’s website, Woods had 199,453 votes and Buck had 198,740, a difference of only 713.
The recount will be completed no later than Thursday at noon. Republican John Barge, who ran for governor in May, is vacating the post Dec. 31 when his term expires. If Woods is confirmed as the Republican winner following the recount, he will face Democrat Valerie D. Wilson, who defeated Alisha Thomas Morgan with 54.4 percent of the vote in last week’s runoff.
