Second Life Upscale Resale has provided about $175,000 in cash grants to more than 25 animal charities since they opened their doors three years ago.
Owners Tanya Mahrous and Toby Tobias said the Avondale Estates community has consistently helped in the store’s success.
“It was serendipitous that we found this building because we were originally looking for a store that was about 2,000 square feet,” said Mahrous. “This space became available and we thought ‘Great, but how do we fill up 5,000 square feet?’ Donations started coming in quickly and it really is a testament to the animal lovers and supporters around the area. We decided to expand to the building next door as well to showcase all of the great furniture being donated to us. The Avondale community has been wonderful and amazing.”
The new building, located at 89 N. Clarendon Ave. opened Sunday.
Mahrous said the store’s growth is due to its exponential success since its opening.
“We’ve had a lot of people tell us they like donating to other organizations, but their hearts lie with animals, so they keep coming here,” she said.
And, the owners said, customers know the money from their purchases are going to a good cause.
“We’ve given money to groups who help pull animals out of shelters who have medical needs and our new focus this year is giving grants to spay and neuter programs that help low-income families sterilize their pets,” said Mahrous.
The store accepts donations of clothing, furniture, kitchen ware, books, décor and more.
Tobias said even items people may think are trash could be valuable in the effort to help them help animals.
“We’ve done close to $4,000 in metal recycling and most people don’t think that an old, aluminum pan that’s scratched would be useful but its quite valuable for recycling. We’re always looking at ways to give items and homeless pets a second chance at life,” he said.
The couple said their own experiences with rescuing pets inspired them to keep helping.
“Someone came to us with a Dalmatian that was about to be euthanized in a shelter, so they asked if we could foster him for a few days which turned into 11 years,” said Mahrous. “That’s when we realized what a need there was for helping rescue animals.”
