Black Friday and Small Business Saturday are joined by Henry County’s own encouragement for shoppers to hit the stores to find those perfect holiday gifts.
Once again, the Henry County Chamber of Commerce is encouraging residents to Shop Local, Shop Henry Saturday.
The day marks a time for shoppers to hit the wide variety of stores the county has to offer in order to help support local business owners and the local economy, much like the national initiative Small Business Saturday, which takes place each year the Saturday following Thanksgiving.
“We decided, however, that Dec. 1 works better for our businesses because people won’t be out of town for the holiday and won’t be competing with football games,” chamber Communications Director Diane Ide said.
The chamber estimates that $68 of $100 in taxes collected by the county’s small businesses is returned to the county.
However, the chamber is also encouraging shopping at large retail stores, as well.
“The chamber is made up of small, medium and large businesses,” Ide said. “The economy improves no matter what business you shop at.”
The return isn’t as large, though, with only $43 of $100 in taxes going back into the community.
But all tax dollars help.
“If we want to keep the same level of service in the county, we have to have the funds there,” Ide said. “It’s always the best policy to shop locally whenever you can.”
Not only does Shop Local, Shop Henry apply to retail, but spending money at other business, such as spas, restaurants and even dry cleaners keeps with the spirit of the initiative.
“Unfortunately, not every business will benefit, such as heating and air companies, but a business like a restaurant and a retail facility, we hope they’ll participate.”
Currently, Ide said the chamber is working to get the word out about the initiative and boost business participation.
“We hope to get a really good participation,” she said.
Businesses that are chamber members can advertise deals and specials for Saturday through the chamber’s website at www.henrycounty.com.
For non chamber members, discounts and promotions can be advertised through the Shop Local, Shop Henry Facebook page at www.facebook.com/shoplocal shophenry.
Residents seeking the deals can visit both web pages.
The chamber membership is comprised of 700 businesses, Ide said.
