Vernon Sanders, 81, is a retired physician who earned his medical degree from Duke University.

He practiced internal medicine in Sandy Springs for 37 years, including 30 years at Northside Hospital. Sanders has made a number of contributions to medical literature, including The Annals of Internal Medicine and the prestigious New England Journal of Medicine.

The father of three, who lives in Alpharetta, has published five volumes of poetry and a biography. “A Boy’s World” will be his fourth book and is fiction.

The protagonist of “A Boy’s World” is a 12-year old-boy, Will Garard, who must face personal and public battles with his friend Jessie when startling events begin to strike in his town. The setting is 1943 in the middle of World War II. Sanders said some of the scenes “were drawn from real-life experiences,” and that the book is dedicated to “all the boys in the old neighborhood.”

Sanders’ main reason for writing “A Boy’s World” is because he “loves to write and there is satisfaction, even exhilaration, in reaching one’s goal.

“At 81, [it’s] good mental exercise,” he said. The target audience for his book is the general public but, as for a primary audience, “family, friends, neighbors, old classmates and acquaintances” will most certainly enjoy it.

“A Boy’s World” is heavier than most novels written through the perspective of a child, Sanders said.

“It is more than a ‘beach book.’… It deals with ‘life and death’ issues,” he said.

Despite a long career in medicine, Sanders said “creative writing was always an interest” for him. He has contributed to several journals of medical literature but now, since he’s retired, he harbors his time to construct more knowledge around the world of poetry, storytelling and adventure through writing.
