Council members greenlighted the purchase of .08 acres of land at 275 South Atlanta Street for $200,000 plus closing costs. The land will be used to reconfigure traffic lanes and provide a sidewalk.
“This will implement one of several steps in the memorandum of agreement between the city and the National Park Service,” Roswell Land Development Manager Clyde Stricklin told council.
As part of Roswell’s Gateway Project, the acquisition is part of a tradeoff with the National Park Service giving the city right-of-way along Atlanta Street in exchange for a new parking lot, driveway and trailhead access to the national park land.
The Atlanta Street entrance to the park will be relocated across from Warm Springs Circle and align with a future median break.
Resident Janet Russell questioned the land purchase price, saying “$200,000 for 15 parking spaces seems high.”
Councilwoman Nancy Diamond said she didn’t disagree.
“But compared to what we would have paid the National Park Service for right-of-way along Highway 9, it isn’t even close,” Diamond said.
