Valentine’s Day is all about gourmet chocolates, fresh flowers and hand-crafted gifts. This year, The DeKalb Neighbor caught up with three locally-owned and operated businesses offering the finest gifts to give for someone special.

A touch of sweetness
Maison Robert Fine Chocolates in Chamblee, a family-owned candy and pastry shop, is offering various specialty treats to celebrate the holiday.

“We’re making heart-shaped almond cookies filled with raspberry and chocolate as well as chocolate shells with strawberries,” said Katia Reeb, one of the shop’s owners.

She said one of the shop’s best-selling Valentine’s treats is its unique chocolate heart-shaped boxes filled with candies.

“The heart-shaped box is made entirely out of chocolate and everything on the inside and outside is edible,” Reeb said. “We have people place orders for them in advance because we do run out of them every year.”

The store is open Tuesday through Saturday, from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Love in bloom
A Blooming Earth in Decatur, a family-owned florist shop, has all of the traditional Valentine’s flower assortments as well as more unique options.

“Roses are always our most popular seller this time of year, and we usually offer deals on those,” said receptionist Christina North.

“We’ve seen some different trends this year with various flowers, though, including white and red lilies, which have been popular.”

She said more people order gifts, like teddy bears and balloons, to go along with their flowers for the holiday.

“We also have customers that will bring a special item they want to include in a bouquet or flower arrangement, so we do that, too,” North said.

The shop will deliver outside of Decatur into parts of Chamblee and Tucker.

Store hours are Monday through Friday, 9 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. and Saturday, 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Thoughtful giving
Squash Blossom Boutique in Decatur, a family-owned gift shop, is offering an assortment of perfumes, lotions, candles and clothing for the holiday.

Store manager Julia Badovinac said hand-crafted jewelry by local artists is a popular Valentine’s gift.

“We have husbands and boyfriends who come in looking for a one-of-a-kind piece of jewelry with unique stones and designs,” she said.

Badovinac said customers also come in to shop for wallets and shoes for the men in their lives.

Squash Blossom Boutique opens every day at 11 a.m.
