Sandy Springs resident launches iPhone app

The idea of a few college buddies coming together to launch an uber-successful computer software company has a familiar ring to it.

Brooks Buffington hopes that storyline plays out in favor of the new free iPhone social media application he and a pair of his Furman University pals created.

Dicho, the app in question, is the brainchild of the Sandy Springs resident and fraternity brothers/partners Tyler Droll and Dougie Warslter.

“We’ve created what we think is a refreshing new app that has a great idea behind it,” said Buffington. “We have the drive, determination and persistence to make it work … and people are already buzzing about it.”

Being that user interaction and connectivity are at its conceptual core, the new application might not take long to find its market.

Dicho — pronounced “dy-ko,” short for dichotomy — allows app holders to post questions with two choices for their followers to answer.

Users are essentially masters of their own domain. Composing each question and its answers falls on their shoulders; they can even add a picture to the mix.

Once a question has been answered, one can follow the results through a real-time graphic that displays the number of votes garnered by each answer.

One can also opt to pose questions anonymously.

“So much of how we communicate with one another is through questions,” said Buffington. “It’s how we learn about each other.

“That being said, the uses for Dicho are endless — the only real limit is your own creativity.”

In addition to their peers, Dicho’s creators are targeting bloggers, reporters, politicians and celebrities among others as potential users.

For the uninitiated, though, Dicho is far from a one-trick pony.

The app is currently being fitted with a groups feature, whereby those within the same circle — think co-workers or friends — can utilize it for their own purposes.

There is a place for Dicho in the business world as well, particularly for firms seeking to better understand consumer behaviors and/or solicit feedback, Droll said.

“The groups feature, I think, will take it to a new level,” said Droll, a Gwinnett County resident. “Then there’s also always the idea of a local business coming to us and wanting us to promote a question — we have the ability to promote it to people in that area.”

“So, it becomes a way for businesses to interact locally even though it’s a national act,” he added. That’s why Groupon is so successful. … They’re a big company with a real local focus.”

The enterprising young trio behind Dicho is already preparing to expand the venture.

In the short-term: a version for Android phones will soon be coming down the pike. Long-range, their limited liability corporation could become a publishing house for other application properties.

At present, Dicho is two-thirds of its creators’ top priority. Buffington and Droll graduated from Furman in May, with Warslter set to finish his senior year there.

Buffington has put his career as an accountant on hold; the same for Droll and his med school studies.

The pair is about to embark on a Southeast promotional tour to spread the word of Dicho to the college set — the demographic widely recognized as the arbiters of all things hip.

“We’re all in. … We’re really gung ho about promoting this idea,” Droll said.
