Search begins for new Roswell police chief

The search for a new Roswell chief of police is getting underway with a job posting and possibly a needs assessment study of the position.

City council members at their Nov. 26 meeting will decide whether to approve a $18,816 contract amendment with IO Solutions, a human resources consulting firm that specializes in public safety.

Council had already contracted with the firm for an assessment study for police sergeants and lieutenants, said City Administrator Kay Love. The amendment would initiate a similar effort for the chief’s position.

“We’ve already posted the job, and the post will stay active until Dec. 15,” Love said.

The posting appears on the city web site as well as with the Georgia Association of Chiefs of Police, the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the Georgia Municipal Association.

The job of top cop was vacated by Duane Orrick when he resigned in late October. Orrick was making $115,000 annually when he left 19 months after he was hired.

Salary range listed in the current job posting is $100,000 to $120,000, Love said.

From the pool of candidates who apply, a short-listed group will go through review and assessment by IO Solutions, she said.

The company “will talk to us first, learn what our issues are, what our policies, procedures, goals and job description are, and then tailor their questions to the skills, character and competency we are looking for,” Love said.

IO Solutions has “a deep bench” of assessors who are experts in public safety and psychology, she said.

Three finalists will be identified, and Love will bring one recommendation from those three to the council, probably around mid March, she said.

Only the Georgia Association of Police Chiefs was used in the search that ultimately led to Orrick’s hiring. This time the city is casting a slightly wider net.

But in evaluating any candidate who is not from Georgia, in addition to a learning curve for Roswell operations, he or she will have to be post certified in Georgia laws. The time that will require before the new hire could take the departmental reins would have to be considered, Love said.
