Competitive and amateur runners, energetic walkers, disability advocates, families and friends of people with developmental disabilities and those who just want to support the special needs community, can join in the fun and festivities of the upcoming second annual Dental Dash at Dawn 5K Run/Walk, to be held March 30.

This event raises funds to benefit the DDD Foundation, which provides comprehensive dental care for adults and children with developmental disabilities.

“We had amazing response from the metro-Atlanta community when the Dental Dash at Dawn 5K Run/Walk was held for the first time last year, and we’re looking forward to increased participation this year,” said Shannon Jefferson, director of fundraising for the foundation. “As one of our major annual fundraising initiatives, this event has something for everyone, and will assist in continuing the vital work of our dental clinic, which attends to the oral health of patients with developmental disabilities from throughout Georgia and surrounding states.”

To address the deficiency in dental health care services to this special community, the foundation opened a dental clinic 10 years ago. Founded by Dr. Deidra Rondeno, DDS., it is currently located at 52 Executive Park in north Druid Hills. The clinic is operated by a small staff of only 12 people and has severely outgrown its space.

Among the services the clinic provides are dental exams, cleanings, extractions, root canals, dentures and fillings. The clinic also provides sedation to patients, as many have a limited ability to withstand dental intervention and need behavioral assistance to undergo dental procedures.

“The DDD Foundation has been quietly filling the void in dental care for Georgians with developmental disabilities for many years and the numbers continue to grow,” said Jefferson. “We are now at a place where we need to secure a larger facility to accommodate the growing demand for services. So we encourage everyone to register to show their support and help us to help this underserved community.”

The event will begin at 8 a.m., at the Old Fourth Ward Park, 680 Dallas St. in Atlanta. Interested participants can now register for the event, which costs $25 through March 28. After that, walk-up registration will be $30. It will also feature food, music and kid friendly activities and awards will be given to the top runners in each category.

The foundation’s dental clinic is the only one of its kind in metro Atlanta, providing dental services to more than 3,000 patients coming from more than 70 counties across the state of Georgia. Patients also come from around the region, with some coming from as far as Alabama, Florida, South Carolina and Tennessee.

To sponsor or to register for the event, visit or call Shannon Jefferson at (404) 942-0086.
