Once again, the outcome between Southwest DeKalb and Forest Park would come down to the final seconds.

With less than 20 seconds left, Casey Kelly made a steal and lofted a pass ahead to Davion Wingate, who converted the game-winning layup in a wild 55-53 road victory for the Lady Panthers on Friday.

“It was a good pass so I couldn't blow my teammates assist,” Wingate said.

“Davion made some mistakes but she also made up for them,” Southwest DeKalb girls’ basketball coach Kathy Walton said.

Tynice Martin led Southwest DeKalb with 25 points and eight rebounds. Forest Park senior Tiffany Wilson scored 15 of her 21 points in the second half.

In the fourth quarter, Southwest DeKalb led by as many as eight points before Shakira Thompson’s 3-pointer from the corner gave Forest Park a 48-47 advantage with 2:42 left. From there on, it turned into a see-saw battle until Martin nailed a short jumper to tie the game at 53-53 with 25 ticks left.

“Tynice is a great player,” Wingate said. “She rebounds, can put the ball on the floor and makes good passes.”

Then Kelly came up with her biggest steal and assist of the game which Wingate completed with a layup. On the ensuing possession, Southwest knocked the ball out of bounds with just .02 seconds remaining.

After a timeout, Forest Park’s inbounds lob attempt was deflected away to finalize things.

“I told the kids you want this type of competition,” Walton said. “You play every day for these types of games that go down to the last few seconds. It is a shame that they had to lose because they fought hard and they have a real good team.”

Last season, Southwest DeKalb also edged Forest Park in the Class AAAAA semifinals at Kennesaw State.
