Local artists will showcase and sell handcrafted gifts and décor starting Thursday evening when the annual holiday artists market at Spruill Gallery begins.

The event, which occurs every year in November and December, is also celebrating its 20th anniversary.

Artists involved with the market work in a variety of media including glass, paper, fibers and wood in order to create festive jewelry, toys, bath products and art decorations.

Most of the proceeds from the items sold go directly to the artist, but a small portion of the profit goes back to the gallery in order to fund other events throughout the year.

Gallery Manager Jennifer Price said the holiday market has grown in popularity since it began in 1993.

“When it first started, we were much smaller but we’ve had a great response from artists in the community wanting to be a part of [the event] and giving back by volunteering their time,” she said.

Price said one of the highlights of the event was bridging the gap between artists and consumers.

“Buyers are often times interested in talking to artists about how they created a certain piece and the market allows them to do that,” she said.

The schedule for this year’s holiday market includes:

-An opening night, which will provide a first look with wine and light food fare provided Thursday from 6 to 9 p.m.

-A family day, which will be an afternoon with family friendly activities and snacks Dec. 7, from noon to 3 p.m.

-Extended late night shopping hours until 8 p.m. Thursdays throughout December.

-A jewelry trunk show, which will feature jewelry artists Dec. 14, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m.

-A holiday sale where shoppers can take 20 percent off their final purchases Dec. 23, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Normal shopping hours for the gallery are 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesdays through Saturdays and noon to 5 p.m. Sundays.

Price said although Dunwoody residents “know about the little white house on the corner of Ashford Dunwoody Road,” the gallery receives the most shoppers during the holiday season.

“The holiday artist market is a great way to introduce people to Spruill Gallery and show them something new and different,” she said.
