The event is scheduled for June 8 from noon to 6 p.m. on Main Street in downtown Dallas. Following the fair, “An Evening with Elvis and Friends” benefit concert, featuring Jeffrey Cole and the Steadfast Quartet, is set for 7 p.m. at the Dallas Theater.
Proceeds from both of the events go to benefit Shepherd’s Rest. This is the organization’s largest fundraiser, said founder Kathryn Melton.
Shepherd’s is a battered women’s shelter that has served the Paulding community for 16 years.
During the fair vendors will line the street, live entertainment is scheduled and children’s activities are planned, said Street Fair coordinator Dawn Eriksen. As of May 29, 38 vendors had signed up and organizers will accept vendors until June 9 at 9 a.m. All vendors are small businesses, she said.
Last year’s event brought 3,500 attendees.
“We are hoping for 5,000 this year,” Eriksen said.
The organization hopes to raise $30,000 after raising $21,000 last year, said administrative assistant Judy Talley.
Eriksen said, “Funding is getting harder to come by.”
With the down economy grants and other funding have become scarce, and this event puts money directly into the ministry’s general fund, she said.
The fair was Eriksen’s brain child, and she has led a group of 25 volunteers who have been helping plan the event since January.
“It has been a labor of love,” she said.
Melton said the event gives residents a chance to connect with the ministry, and to help them help those in need.
“It [street fair] gives us a high presence in the community,” she said.
