“I decided to be involved in Student Leadership Johns Creek because I had just started to understand what it meant to give back to the community, and I wanted to develop myself and the community through this program,” said Johns Creek High School junior Joshua Tam. “Being a part of the inaugural class seemed appropriate for such a task.”
Tam is also involved in various math and science clubs as well as the Emory Youth Symphony, and he said through Student Leadership Johns Creek he has already learned how to make contributions to the community and communicate with others.
“At Student Leadership, I’ve been able to better my communication skills and my organizational skills. I’ve been able to watch and develop my own leadership skills, and help others along the way,” he said.
Student Leadership Johns Creek is a two-year program for high school students who live in Johns Creek. Much like its professional counterpart Leadership Johns Creek, participants learn leadership skills, communication skills and how to make an impact on their community.
Nora Hansen, a junior at Chattahoochee High School, said last year her Beta Club sponsor recommended her for the program.
“It sounded like a great opportunity,” Hansen said. “Everyone can learn about leadership. I was excited to be accepted.”
In addition to Student Leadership Johns Creek, she is involved in cross country, swimming, Relay for Life and activities with her church’s youth group.
She said Student Leadership Johns Creek has led her to meet peers and adults who have inspired her.
“What impresses me most is that a group of adult leaders came together to do this for us,” she said. “We have received so much community support and that really makes me want to succeed.”
