As a self-proclaimed fat-athlete, Decatur resident Tina Tait chose to have vertical sleeve gastrectomy to take charge of her weight.

“I always wanted to be the athlete, but my weight kept holding me back.” Tait said.

Tait confessed she has continually struggled with her weight and decided the surgery was the best option to help her make the healthy lifestyle changes she needed.

“I would lose 50 [pounds], but soon gain it back plus another 20 [pounds],” Tait said.

Tait also desired to take control of her weight, since she neared the age her dad was when he died. She said he also struggled with his weight.

A friend of Tait’s, who had success with gastric bypass surgery, encouraged her to look into the procedure. Tait started talking with her doctors about the best choice.

“My doctor suggested I have the sleeve,” Tait said. “Because she knew I had the will power not to revert back to my old lifestyle.”

With the sleeve, Tait’s physician removed 85 percent of her stomach. Post-surgery, her caloric intake goal is 800 calories with a large portion of protein.

“The sleeve gastrectomy procedure we used on Tina restricts the amount of food she eats before feeling full. Her meal sizes are now approximately 60mL to 100mL of food,” Tait’s bariatric surgeon at Piedmont Hospital Dr. Charles Procter said.

Besides the usual training of running and yoga to be healthy, Tait is preparing for a half marathon. She said she never thought she would have this opportunity or think two miles would be a short run.

Other lifestyle changes have happened since the surgery. Tait said her husband has been very supportive and if they choose to go to downtown Decatur for dinner or social they will walk instead of drive.

Tait started a blog and encourages anyone who is going through a similar situation to at least journal about their thoughts and eating habits.

“I was preparing food in the kitchen one evening and by the time I was done I was full,” Tait said. “Even though it was healthy I did realize how much I was munching and having a food journal has helped me with that.”

To date Tait has lost 85 pounds and set a goal weight of 125 pounds.
