The Highballs are ready to crank up their retro sound and good times vibe for their Concerts by the Springs debut.

The band will take the stage Sunday at Heritage Green as part of the 18th season of the outdoor performances hosted by Heritage Sandy Springs.

Concert-goers should prepare to be taken on a melodic ride back to the featured act’s favorite decade.

“We will be performing our ‘Totally ’80s’ show,” said Highballs lead vocalist and co-founder Meredith McLucas. “Expect a high-energy live performance of fun retro pop and rock classics from that era.”

The night’s playlist will be a virtual hit parade of tunes the audience can sing along to — from those made famous by ’80s icons like Michael Jackson, Prince, Journey and Madonna to a host of one-hit wonders.

The dynamic Athens-based quintet features McLucas’ husband and band co-founder, Bryan, on bass. Donovan Babb is the drummer. Ben Spraker holds down lead guitar duties. Rounding out the group is Rand Lines on keyboard/guitar. All members contribute vocals as well.

The Highballs are not your average cover band — which probably explains their growing popularity. Paying homage while sprinkling in their own bit of panache has been a recipe for success.

“We try to stay true to the artists’ original recordings as much as possible, with an added raw energy that you can only get from a live show,” Meredith McLucas said. “We have been told that it’s kind of like seeing all of your ’80s bands in concert at one time.”

Getting the crowd up on its feet will be their primary objective from the first song on.

“The Highballs have become a staple on the Athens music scene, and we are delighted to bring them to Sandy Springs for the first time for a step back in time,” said Rebekah Henry Murphy, Heritage’s director of development and special events.

Concert attendees are invited to dress in full ’80s attire in celebration of the decade. Murphy said the host organization will have a few surprises — spandex, anyone? — up its collective sleeves.

For their part, The Highballs are raring to go.

“We have played similar outdoor concert series in the past, so we imagine it will be a fun, laidback atmosphere with a great mix of people,” Meredith McLucas said. “Hopefully, everyone will enjoy the evening and we’ll get a dance party going before too long.”
