For the third year in a row, the PATH Foundation, Chastain Park Conservancy and Chastain Park Athletic Club are joining forces to host the Mercedez-Benz of Buckhead triPATHlon and Splash and Dash.

The race is one of few intown, urban triathlon events in the country, said Rosa McHugh, interim executive director of the conservancy.

“I love the community aspect of it,” she said. “Three very different organizations [are] coming together and saying, ‘How can we work together and make an event of this magnitude happen?’”

PATH Foundation volunteer Brian Cosgray said it aims to raise $20,000, and the funds will be divided evenly among the three groups. The foundation is a nonprofit which develops trails for recreation and commuting, the conservancy is a nonprofit devoted to enhancing and restoring Chastain Park and the athletic club is a nonprofit which promotes aquatics, health, recreation and safety.

The race starts a 7:30 a.m., and includes a 400-yard swim in the park’s pool, a 15-mile bike ride through north Buckhead and a 5K run on the Chastain’s trail. Children 6 to 14 can participate in the Splash and Dash, which involves a swim and a run.

“It’s getting the next generation interested in athletics and sports,” McHugh said. “There is so much benefit you can get from being involved in athletics.”

She said there are about 300 people registered and still time to sign up.

“We’ve got a better course this year,” Cosgray said. “We re-routed it to make it flow a little better. We have better prizes, better T-shirts and better medals.”

Gift cards and medals will be given to the top three finishers in each age category for men and women, Cosgray said, and post-race snacks and massages will be available for all participants.

The triPATHlon is a USAT spring triathlon, with an entry fee of $80 for USAT members, $92 for non-members and $130 for relay teams. Splash and Dash registration is $40 for USAT members and $50 for non-members.

Packet pickup is from 5:30 to 7 a.m., and the race starts at 7:40 a.m., and is followed by an awards ceremony at 10:30 a.m. There will be no race day registration.

Anyone out there hear anything about inclement weather and its effect on this event? Is there a communication tool in place that allows for the organizers to tell the registrants if the event is rained out or canceled?
