Six polling sites are open through Friday from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Once early voting ends, voters must wait until Tuesday to cast their ballots at their assigned polling locations.
A total of 58,338 early and absentee voters submitted their ballots during the first 10 days of early voting, county records show. Early voting began Oct. 15.
The daily turnout exceeded 5,000 voters during the first week of early voting and 7,000 voters the second week, according to elections officials.
The county doubled the number of locations from three to six Monday to accommodate more early voters. H. Maxine Daniels, director of the DeKalb County Board of Registration and Elections, said she anticipated a dramatic increase the last week leading up to the election.
“In 2008, we [had as many early voters] in the last week as we did in the first five weeks,” she said.
Although the county allowed early voting for six weeks in advance of the 2008 election as opposed to three this year, Daniels said the county’s capacity for voters has grown.
“In 2008, we were voting [at] one location with less than 40 machines,” she said. “This year at the main location, we have 80 machines.”
The additional five locations have between 20 to 25 polling machines each. Daniels said there were hardly any major lines for early voters who came out in the first two weeks.
She added voters are taking less time to fill out the ballots this year.
“One of the things that’s also helping … is the fact that the ballot is so much simpler than 2008,” she said. “In 2008, the general election also had the school board and the judges and that was moved to August. And in DeKalb County, a lot of our local races are unopposed.”
Included in this year’s ballot are special election questions for Brookhaven residents, who will choose their mayor and city council members. Chamblee residents will find a special election choice on their ballot about annexation.
To streamline the voting process, Daniel reminded voters to bring their government-issued identification and to not wear any campaign paraphernalia.
