After more than 60 years of bringing the best of Broadway to Atlanta and delighting hundreds of thousands of adults and children alike, Theater of the Stars Inc. announced in a news release Wednesday it is closing.

The troubled economy has resulted in underperforming seasons for the past several years, creating financial obstacles too difficult to overcome. Action steps are in the works to liquidate and wind down the organization. Subscriber’s refunds will be an important part of the closing process as the company pays off debts as quickly and efficiently as it is able.

“We’ve had a great run,” said Theater of the Stars Vice President Brian D. Frey. “We could not be more grateful to our many patrons and supporters who have been a part of our family over the years. We hate to say ‘goodbye.’ It was a very difficult decision for all involved.”

Theater of the Stars was led to national acclaim through the artistic vision of Christopher B. Manos. Manos is an iconic force in Atlanta and a major contributor to the arts in the region. He helped found the Metropolitan Atlanta Arts Fund, Just Us Theatre (the first African-American theatre company in Atlanta), and was a major driving force behind the creation of the Atlanta Ballet, the Atlanta Opera and the Woodruff Arts Center. Theater of the Stars launched many professional careers and has provided countless opportunities for young people to perform on the stage of the Fox Theatre.

In the introduction to “Harmony – A New Musical” Sunday night at its opening night at the Alliance Theatre in Midtown, Alliance Artistic Director Susan V. Booth mentioned Theatre of the Stars’ impact on the city.

“About a week ago Atlanta lost a [wonderful] theatre company, Theatre of the Stars,” Booth said. “It launched the careers of some amazing performers. All of us owe a tremendous debt to Chris Manos.”

This summer Theatre of the Stars announced it was cancelling “Buddy: The Buddy Holly Story” and “Dreamgirls,” which were to be performed in July and August, respectively. In August it announced it was cancelling all but one of its remaining 2013-14 season performances, Disney’s “The Little Mermaid (Sept. 7 through 15)” and “Cats” (Jan. 14 through 19), in what was to be its 61st season.

The Fox Theatre will now be presenting “Stomp” Sept. 25 through 29. Please note the Fox is not affiliated with Theater of the Stars and is unable to provide any information to subscribers as it relates to its season tickets.

Tickets for “Stomp” are on sale at 1-855-285-8499 or
