Keith Sweat will perform Sunday at the former site of Shannon Mall in the parking lot area.
There is no charge to attend the concert and residents can bring their own tables, chairs and food, beginning at 6 p.m.
The opening act will hit the stage around 8 p.m. and Sweat is expected to beginning performing an hour later.
City Manager Steve Rapson said quite a crowd is expected for the show.
“We’re anticipating having 25,000 people there,” he said.
Rapson said the concert will be beneficial for the community for a multitude of reasons.
“The whole purpose is putting people in the area,” he said. “It’s one of those ways that we are trying to help our local economy by having people from out of state or jurisdiction come in to stay in our hotels and eat in our restaurants.”
Sweat’s performance is the second and final component to the 2012 Sizzling Summer Concert Series that began Fourth of July weekend. That weekend Norman Brown and Gerald Albright performed at Shannon Mall for attendees.
As with the Fourth of July concert, canned goods will be collected from attendees.
“What we do is collect those canned goods and divvy it up among church food pantries in Union City,” said Rapson. “We figured that we get that many people together it would be a good time to do it. This time we’re calling it the Labor Day food drive.”
Additionally, 15 food vendors will be present at the concert selling “everything from barbecue to ICEE drinks,” Rapson said.
Parking is free and attendees will be able to park in the surrounding areas.
Shannon Mall is at 1000 Shannon Mall in Union City.
