Online voters have spent the last month trying to help Alpharetta’s Waggy World Paw Park win up to $100,000 through PetSafe’s Bark for Your Park contest. Today, PetSafe, a company which manufactures electronic pet training products, will announce the finalists moving on to the next stage in the contest.

Alpharetta’s recreation and parks director, Mike Perry, said the department first learned of the contest through a newsletter from the National Recreation and Parks Association. It is the first time he has been involved in an online voting contest to get money for a park in the city.

Though the grand prize is $100,000, the runner-up city in the small, medium and large population categories will win $25,000. The finalist with the highest percentage of votes compared to the city’s population will also win $25,000 and be named the Bark from Your Heart award winner.

Perry said plans have not been set on what the city would spend the money on should they win one of the prizes.

“We would probably try to get some stakeholders involved,” he said. “We would take time to survey the users of the park a little bit and see maybe what we’re missing.”

He added, “We’ve got some ideas ourselves such as some shade structures and possibly some type obstacles for the dogs or enhancements to the water facilities and some things like that.”

The Waggy World Paw Park takes up about 1.5 acres at Wills Park and has separate areas for small dogs and larger dogs to play.

“While it is a dog park … the people that bring their dogs, they get as much out of it as the dogs do,” Perry said. “It’s a very social environment for the dog as well as the owner.”

Notices at the dog park and Wills Park, as well as on the city website and in a weekly city newsletter, requested community members to participate in the contest by voting for Waggy World, he said.

If selected as a finalist, online voting will continue through July 26. PetSafe will announce the contest winners July 31.
