The Westminster boys’ golf team’s bid for a three-peat was upended by a superb day by the North Oconee golf team in the Class AA state championships Monday at Waynesboro Country Club near Augusta.

Led by low medalist David Mackey’s score of 65, North Oconee shot 303 as a team to defeat runner-up Westminster by 12 strokes (315). The Wildcats were led by Daniel Kim’s 74, and they also counted rounds by Jackson Heazel (80), Hunter Bremer (80) and Tripp H’Doubler or Patrick Bridges (81).

The Wildcats had won the previous two championships and four of the last five.

Lovett’s James Scott competed at the event individually and shot an 87.

The Westminster girls, led by Carlisle Withers (81) and Jenny Qian (85), finished third in Class AA out of 16 with a 166, behind champion Greater Atlanta Christian (157) and Vidalia (158). The event was held at Goshen Plantation Golf Club in Augusta.

The Holy Innocents’ girls carded their best finish ever in Class A, taking seventh place out of 18 teams with a score of 193. Freedom Wright (96) and Mei Landskroener (97) had their scores counted at the event at Pointe South Golf Club in Augusta. Athens Academy won the title.
