Kingston Lanier ran for 104 yards and two touchdowns to lead the Bulldogs to a 16-7 victory over Whitefield Academy in their Region 6A play-in game.

With the loss, the Wolfpack fall to 6-4 and will have to wait until Tuesday to see if they are one of the at-large entries into the playoffs when the Class A power racnkings are released.

“We’ll have to sit here and wait until next Tuesday to find out what our fate is for the playoffs,” Whitefield coach Jimmy Fields said. “We’ll just have to wait and see.”

Richard Sherrell’s 1-yard touchdown run midway through the second quarter gave Whitefield Academy its only lead of the night at

7-6. Sherrell finished the night with 80 rushing yards and one reception for six yards.

“(We) gave a tremendous fight,” Wolfpack coach Jimmy Fields said.

Whitefield Academy held the lead through the rest of the first half, but wouldn’t score again.

“It was just lack of execution. We overcame some adversity early, came back and got the lead, but we didn’t come out the second half, specifically the third quarter, and play like we needed to,” Fields said.

Whitefield made their job more difficult by not holding on to the football. An interception and three lost fumbles cost the Wolfpack their momentum.

The Bulldogs retook the lead with less than a minute left in the third quarter as Gus Navarro kicked a 25-yard field goal putting Trion up 9-7.

Trailing by two, the last of the Whitefield turnovers sealed its fate.

A fumble with three minutes to play set the Bulldogs up for its final touchdown, and a 16-7 lead with 1:42 to play.

For the Wolfpack, this was an emotional loss as most team members appeared to take the defeat hard.

“The characteristic that I love most about this team is that losing is unacceptable,” Fields said.
