Sitting on a 6-8 record at the beginning of January, the Woodland Lady Wildcats are making improvements to their game as they prepare for a region-filled schedule in 2013.

“We played well during Christmas and I’m excited about that. I knew it would be tough afterwards and I’m looking forward to playing 2013,” said head coach Colman Roberts before the first game of the new year.

Roberts said as they go into this tough part of their schedule, the girls know what is ahead of them and he hopes they can continue playing well.

Of those on the team playing well, senior Kennedy Robinson is the team’s top scorer. At 5-foot-9, this shooting guard collected 17 points against Rome during a holiday tournament, making the all-tournament team.

In addition to Robinson, Roberts said junior Brooke Hummel really stepped up since the team lost its other point guard.

Roberts also said 5-foot-7 junior small forward Carly Bucy does a lot of unseen things for the team and is a great utility player.

As for defense, Roberts said Hummel is typically put on the opposing team’s best player and she does very well with that job.

There are individual players doing well, but Roberts noted that there are two problems which his team needs to improve on – handling pressure and boxing out.

“Handling pressure is one thing that kills us…Boxing out is a big issue. We’re not tall enough or aggressive enough not to box out,” said Roberts.

Luckily, his team has improved in the post with Robinson and 6-foot junior power forward Marissa Dubose working that area.

For this season Roberts said his team still has a lot to work on to get to where they want to be, but he would like to see his team make it to the state playoffs.

“We haven’t made the state playoffs in a while, since ’02-’03, so it’s definitely a goal. We talk about it. We see the banner every day since it hangs over our locker room. I would like to see a new number go up,” said Roberts.
