The Henry County Parks and Recreation Department will play host to the USSSA Junior World Series beginning July 1 and the CAMsports Fastpitch Softball World Series July 20-22.
Teams from all across the Southeast, California, Texas and Puerto Rico will compete for the USSSA World Series title.
“I think it is exciting to bring all those people into our community,” HCPRD director Tim Coley said. “It is such a great opportunity for our kids to play against some of the best teams in the nation. It also allows us to showcase our facilities and our program.”
The Junior World Series is for 6-, 7- and 8-year-olds.
The CAMsports World Series will have teams full of 6-year-olds all the way up to 16-year-olds.
Coley said the players may be in their first years playing the sport, but they recognize what is going on during the World Series.
“They are always excited and you can tell they know the difference between this tournament and other tournaments,” Coley said. And it can be an enjoyable experience for them as long as the parents and coaches keep it in perspective.”
Coley said being so close to Atlanta has helped HCPRD bring the USSSA and CAMsports back to Henry County.
“I think the teams enjoy coming to Atlanta,” Coley said. “There is a lot of stuff to do here with Braves games, the World of Coca-Cola and many other attractions.”
Coley said the fields at the Henry County parks are kept up all year, but there is a little extra special attention given to them before the big tournaments.
“We want to make sure these teams feel like they are coming someplace special when they play here,” Coley said.
Coley said another reason for the successful tournaments in the past has been the support from the county.
“The Chamber of Commerce and the Convention and Visitor’s Bureau do a lot of work with the hotels and restaurants in the area,” Coley said. “They let everyone know to get ready for the tournaments.”
