Elementary, middle and high school students will take to the stage at the Act3 Playhouse in Sandy Springs Saturday to display their talent at the annual ShowStoppers competition.

The show, directed and produced by Act3 Productions and sponsored by Art Sandy Springs, will feature 44 students from 30 different metro Atlanta schools who had to audition for the chance to showcase their talent and compete for the top prize.

“We think that it’s exciting to be able to showcase young talent and there’s a lot of it in the Atlanta area,” said Patti Folio, a spokeswoman for Act3 Productions. “The thing that’s different about our competition is they don’t just come in and compete. They do have to be selected to be in it and then we coach them and help them to refine their act.”

Peggy Allen, a spokeswoman for Art Sandy Springs, said the talent competition originally started about five or six years ago as part of ArtSSpring, a 30-day celebration of arts in the city. Act3 took over the production last year and the event expanded to include students throughout the metro region, she said.

There will be three separate shows for each school level. Elementary school students will perform at 11 a.m., middle school students will compete at 3 p.m., and high school students will showcase their talents at 8 p.m.

“Most of them are singers,” Folio said. “We have a few actors who are doing a monologue presentation and a few people that are doing a vocal [presentation] with guitar. We have one high school student who’s a tap dancer.”

She said each group will perform a collective finale act where they will sing and dance.

"That bonds them together as a group so they become friends and learn how to work together with other people,” Folio said.

Allen said, “They’re very talented young people. [The show] is just a way to reach out to the students to get them involved in arts and get them an opportunity to shine.”

Cash prizes of $100, $75 and $50 will be awarded to the first-, second- and third-place winners in each school level. The competition will be judged by local arts professionals, including Erica Ambrose, Barry Brandon, Catherin Moulton, Kimberly Wistedt and Emily Kleypas.

Each show will begin with a performance by the Act3 Youth Improv Troupe.

Tickets to each performance are $10 for students and seniors and $15 for adults. Tickets for reserved seating cost $25.
