The Clarence Brown Conference Center is set to fully open for business in October and in a move that has caused a bit of a snit is the proposed move to annex the center from county jurisdiction to city of Cartersville jurisdiction.
Commissioner Clarence Brown said the move is mainly to allow for more provisions for the type of alcohol served at the facility. The reasoning, according to Brown, is that the conference center would attract more events if it broadened its scope on the type of alcohol permitted on the grounds. While the conference center itself isn't serving up the spirits, those who hold events there have more latitude on what they can serve outside of beer and wine.
Inside the city limits of Cartersville, the rules are a bit different. The term alcohol is broadened to include "distilled spirits" merely a euphemism for hard liquor.
While nothing suggests that the move is one with economical and practical purposes, some in the community feel the drive behind the annexation sends the wrong message.
Do you think it's a good idea to annex the conference center so that there is more latitude for the types of alcohol permitted?
