When Madeline Dolan was in third grade, she began making her own jewelry.

But what started out as a hobby quickly evolved into a business venture for the young entrepreneur and Buckhead resident.

“My first show was December of my third grade year near Christmas,” the 12-year-old said. “I’ve done it each year and it keeps getting better and better.”

Her business, Taddy Designs, which got its moniker from Madeline’s younger sister Lily’s nickname for her, will hold its annual Christmas sale Saturday at the Shoppe of Vinings.

Throughout the last four years, Madeline, who is now in sixth grade at the Westminster Schools in Buckhead, has created nearly 300 necklaces, bracelets and earrings.

As her business has grown, however, so has her talent and reach — progressing from stringing basic beads on stretchy cord to linking metal chains with precious stones.

“I started out using plastic materials. Now I only use real [glass and stone] beads,” she said.

Madeline took a few lessons to learn the basics of jewelry making, but for the most part has taught herself how to construct more intricate designs.

“I just like learning more and more,” she said.

Since last year, Madeline has not only created all her inventory, but has kept track of her business finances including cost analyses and price points.

“Math in school has really helped,” she said. “The biggest challenge is telling people about my business.”

Buckhead resident and family friend Jennifer Gordon has been a loyal customer for three years.

“I think she has a real eye for what looks great. As she gets older, her tastes get more sophisticated,” she said. “Also, the fact she can manage the business is incredibly impressive.”

Along with making money to put back into her business, Madeline is donating 20 percent of the proceeds from her sale to the Atlanta Day Shelter for Women and Children in Midtown.
