There is a thin line between craft and art.

But two Buckhead residents participating in the American Craft Council (ACC) Show in Atlanta Friday through Sunday agree that crafting is all about the relationship between the crafter and her materials.

“I think when you’re in fine crafts, you have to love your material,” said jewelry designer Debra Lynn Gold. “You’re using materials that traditionally have been used for utilitarian purposes, but you have a contemporary vision.”

With a master of fine arts in silversmithing and jewelry design from Indiana University, Ms. Gold has been sharing her craft and passion as a teacher at the Chastain Arts Center in Buckhead for 25 years.

She makes sculptural and geometric pieces of jewelry that employ movement, space and shape.

“I don’t follow trends. That’s never been an interest to me,” she said. “I play with the material. It’s about constantly being responsive to your materials and seeing possibilities in them.”

Ms. Gold is a veteran to craft shows and recently returned from the ACC show in Baltimore, Md.

“ACC provides a sophisticated marketplace for fine crafts and it is selectively juried,” she said.

For Laura Martin, who has been quilting since she was old enough to sew, this will be her first ACC show, and she will be featuring her new favorite material — neckties.

“I get excited about the products,” she said. “I think they’re unique. They’re beautiful, useful and they’re super well made.”

Ms. Martin uses recycled neckties to create tote bags, clutches, pillows and diaper bags.

“I never tire of it,” she said. “I just love working with ties. They’re the most beautiful textiles in the world.”

Ms. Martin’s crafts have noble twist, too. Her business, Ties That Matter, creates jobs for refugee and homeless women while donating portions of profits to the downtown Atlanta-based Outreach and Advocacy Center, which serves the homeless.

“We feel that craft and art is a community that we want to involve as many people in as possible,” she said.

By using recycled materials — neck ties donated by churches, schools and law firms — Ties That Matter also focuses on being eco-conscious and low waste.

“I think we were chosen [for the craft show] because we use recycled materials,” she said. “It’s great. Working with silk ties is a lot more fun than working with something like phone cords.”
