6:45 p.m. --- It has already been a banner day for DeKalb County, as the county has already won two state championship in Class AAAA. Miller Grove routed Mays in the boys' final, while Southwest Dekalb knocked off Northwest Whitfield to win the girls' final.
Redan will attempt to repeat as champions in the Class AAAAA final shortly. However, they will run up against a very capable squad in Norcross (
Norcross is led by coach Angie Hembree. From 2001 to 2005, she led Collins Hill to three state championships before moving on to become an assistant coach at the University of Miami. According to the Gwinnett Daily Post, she returned to Norcross to coach as a result of her father becoming ill. Since then, the Lady Blue Devils' program has made great strides, and this state title game would mark its zenith.
The last time Hembree met Redan, coach Jerry Jackson was an assistant. However, Collins Hill defeated Redan in the 2005 Class AAAAA state semifinals, 62-45, en route to their third state championship in five years.
In order for Redan to extend its winning streak to 58 games and repeat as Class AAAAA champions, the Lady Raiders will need to reverse that history. Along with a history in Hembree, they will have to contend with Norcross' pedigree. Senior point guard Briana Jordan is former Atlanta Braves outfielder Brian Jordan's daughter, while freshman power forward Diammond DeShields is former Major League Baseball's Delino DeShields' daughter.
In just under 20 minutes, we will see whether or not the Lady Raiders can rebound from yesterday's slow start. Though Redan came out on top, Jackson was reluctant to call their performance anything but lackluster.
