MARTA Police have arrested a suspect in the fatal shooting of a 19-year-old customer that occurred at the East Point rail station on Wednesday, March 17. The suspect, 20-year-old Broderick Smith, was taken into custody at about 5 p.m. on March 18 at an apartment complex in the West Lake community.
The Fulton County Medical Examiner’s Office identified the victim as Anthony Beavers of Jonesboro.
“MARTA extends its deepest condolences to the family of Mr. Beavers, who was a talented and promising young man,” said MARTA Board Chairman Michael W. Tyler. “We committed to the family and this community that the person responsible for this heinous act would be brought to justice as expeditiously as possible, and thanks to outstanding work by the MARTA Police Department, the suspect was in custody less than twenty-four hours after the incident occurred.”
Smith has been charged with murder, felony murder, aggravated assault and the possession of a firearm in the commission of a felony.
MARTA Police Chief Wanda Dunham credited the quick arrest to hard work and dedication by MARTA officers and detectives, assistance from other law enforcement agencies, eyewitness statements and tips from the public.
“Thank you to the U.S. Marshalls’ Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the East Point and Atlanta Police Departments for their valuable contributions during this investigation,” said Chief Dunham. “MPD committed all its resources and worked tirelessly with its law enforcement partners and the public to ensure this arrest. Our highest priority is protecting the safety of our customers, employees and the public at large, and we will continue to uphold this commitment to you.”
MARTA Police are still actively investigating the incident and ask that the public contact the MPD tip line at (404) 848.4910 with any additional information.
