In the classic tradition of entrepreneurs everywhere, Derek Enriquez saw a need and met it.

During the nine months that the 19-year-old Roswell resident worked at Studio Movie Grill on Holcomb Bridge Road, one of the recurring customer requests was to buy candy, Enriquez said. But the facility didn’t offer it at that time.

“There was a store directly next door and I envisioned opening a candy shop there,” said Enriquez, a 2010 Centennial High graduate who was a championship wrestler his senior year.

He pitched the idea to his mother, Yvonne Figueroa, who had owned several businesses, including a pizzeria, deli and bar in New York. She thought the idea had merit and expanded the concept to a coffee bar.

“There was nothing here for people to get a cup of coffee and a cupcake before or after a movie,” Figueroa said.

Last month, Sweet Sensations & Espresso Bar opened at 2880 Holcomb Bridge Road. It is the only place in the Southeast that serves coffees from Beanstock Roasters in Massachusetts, which Figueroa said is the best coffee she has ever had.

Three baristas work seven days a week to whip up all the popular coffee drinks customers love. Additionally, the shop offers gluten-free pastries made by a Roswell bakery. Sweets on the menu are muffins, like blueberry and apple cinnamon, as well as cupcakes, such as chocolate mint and chocolate chip.

Beverages run from juicers and soda to smoothies made with dairy or almond or soy milk. Trail mixes, protein bars and a wide range of candy complete the choices.

But soon there may be some more decadent treats available. Figueroa and Enriquez said they are in negotiations with Alpharetta’s Alpine Bakery to carry some of the bakery’s pastries.

“We like to support local businesses,” said Figueroa.

Sweet Sensations & Espresso Bar is open 7 a.m. weekdays, 9 a.m. Saturdays and noon Sundays. For more information, find them on Facebook or call (770) 518-6333.
