Mount Vernon Presbyterian wrestling coach Mike Edmonson was happy, above all else, to see his team’s best effort of the year rewarded.

The Mustangs won their second straight GISA Region 1-AAA wrestling title Thursday, and Mount Vernon qualified all 12 of their wrestlers for the state meet this Friday in Macon.

“I definitely had high expectations for this team and they definitely delivered,” Edmonson said. “Everybody was feeding off everybody else. One guy gives something extra, then the next guy did it, and they were all feeding off it and it was contagious. They all gave it their best effort, by far the best effort of the entire year for each individual and for the team. It gives them a lot of belief in their own ability at the right time.”

Mount Vernon took 163 points to runner-up Mill Springs’ 101.

The Mustangs had five wrestlers take individual region titles in Avery Fisher (126) Trent Ballard (132), Robert Barclift (152), George Gavalas (195) and Judge Jones (220) and four runners-up in Matthew Guest (113), Jacob Munoz (138), Connor Martel (160) and Christian Burke (182). Three other wrestlers won their consolation final match to take third place: Alex Kolb (120), Gareth Tremege (145) and Noah Fried (170).

Edmonson praised their extra exertion at practice the week before regions.

“I expect another barnburner of a practice week, everybody giving it all they’ve got and Friday going down there and giving it their best on the mat,” he said.

Weber, led by first-year coach Zaque Shindell, took fifth and sent six of its wrestlers on to the state meet.

Jacob Seagraves (132) and Josh Cohen (145) both took runner-up in their respective classifications, Dorrin Fittermann (106), Jonathan Geller (113) and Rourke Rabinowitz (138) finished third and Dylan Shaban (152) placed fourth.

“I’m very proud,” Shindell said. “Obviously this isn’t where I’d like to finish the season, but again, that takes time. I’m very proud of the guys and the effort and commitment they’ve made, and I look forward to seeing what we can do at state.”
