Leanne and Sean Tuohy of Memphis, Tenn. — two parents made famous for their story portrayed in the 2009 film “The Blind Side” — will be the keynote speakers at the 12th annual Dining for a Difference.

The event, which will be held Thursday at the Cobb Galleria Centre near Vinings, benefits one of Georgia’s oldest nonprofits, Families First.

“What the Tuohys are expressing through their story is exactly the message we want to get out to our community,” said event co-chair Lou Winship, referring to the couple’s adoption of a teenager, Michael Oher, who went on to become an NFL player.

“That’s the bigger message,” said Ms. Winship. “If all of us can step out of our boxes and reach out and touch someone, the payback is much bigger our way. What we receive is huge.”

By focusing on child and youth permanency — adoption, foster care and group housing — as well as counseling and supportive services, the mission of Families First is to protect children’s futures by strengthening the family, said CEO Kim Anderson.

“If we understand the simple tenant that families are the primary institution and if we can make sure children are successful, we can avoid some of the other problems we see in the community,” said Ms. Anderson. “Caring for one another and caring for our community’s children is why [the organization has] been successful.”

She said that the event was not just a fundraiser, but a chance to honor people who have dedicated their lives to helping children and families.

“It gives us an opportunity to share with the community in a very purposeful way not only the work we do and the impact it has on families and children but to raise up every day people who do the work,” she said.

The guest speakers, she said, also embody the organization’s message.

“The Tuohy story wasn’t about money or the resources they could give to Michael Oher,” she said. “It was about the fact that they stopped long enough to find someone at risk and intervene.”

With about 800 guests for the sold out show, Ms. Winship said there is a waiting list.

“I really feel with the event this year that we’ve just been blessed beyond belief, she said. “Our committee is very dedicated and passionate.”

Both Ms. Winship and Ms. Anderson said they think the event will be inspiring for guests.

“Hopefully everyone will walk away knowing they can do something,” said Ms. Anderson.
