With the cold days of winter gone for another year, now is the time to set out feeders for wild birds.

“Between the nesting season and migration spring is definitely our peak time,” said Wild Bird Centers of Dunwoody owner David Boyd. “Spring and summer is a very important time to feed because there is not enough natural food.”

The store has operated in the Williamsburg at Dunwoody shopping center for more than four years.

Boyd said now is the perfect time to attract goldfinches and bluebirds.

He said he sells a special type of seed and feeder to attract the finches. The feeder is a long tube of steel mesh which allows the small birds to clench the mesh while picking seeds through the tiny holes.

To attract bluebirds, Boyd recommends feeding them meal worms in a small dish feeder.

“Bluebirds are the Holy Grail of the bird hunt,” he said. “Everyone wants bluebirds in their yard.”

Joyce Broome traveled from Norcross to the Wild Bird Centers in Dunwoody last week to buy meal worms, a bluebird house and other seeds.

She is a regular customer of the store.

“This is the first year I’ve used meal worms, but I always try to keep feeders out,” Ms. Broome said.

For people who have trouble with squirrels raiding bird feeders, the Wild Bird Centers sells several types of squirrel-proof feeders.

“Squirrel-proof feeders make up about 80 percent of our bird feeder sales,” Boyd said.

The most popular model, he said, is a feeder with a spring hinge, triggered by the squirrel’s weight, which closes the feeder when a squirrel tries to eat from it.

With the mild Georgia climate, several birds — like chickadees, woodpeckers and blue jays — can be fed year round.

“You can feed birds 10 or 11 months out of the year,” Boyd said. “Most of our feeder birds don’t migrate.”

The Wild Bird Centers also carries a variety of bird baths, bird houses and yard decorations.

The Wild Bird Centers of Dunwoody is at 2472 Jett Ferry Road, Suite 400, in the Williamsburg at Dunwoody Shopping Center in Dunwoody.
